The #2 Reason Good Books Don’t Make It Into the Louisville Book Festival: Category Balance
One of the hardest emails we send each year is a letter telling an author that their book was not selected for the Louisville Book Festival. We know what each book represents. Months… sometimes years of writing. Countless revisions. Dreams. Hope. Courage.
That’s why we want to share something many people don’t realize about the selection process. Sometimes, a wonderful book isn’t selected for one simple reason:
Category balance.
A Book Festival Is Like Building a Library
Imagine walking into a bookstore where every shelf contained only romance novels. Or only poetry. Or only memoirs. Even if every single book were beautifully written, most readers would leave disappointed because there wouldn’t be enough variety. A book festival works the same way.
Our goal isn’t simply to showcase great books. Our goal is to create a festival where every visitor can discover something they love. That means thoughtfully representing a wide range of genres, voices, age groups, and interests.
Every Reader Deserves to Find Their Next Favorite Book
The Louisville Book Festival welcomes readers of all ages and interests.
That means our festival includes books in all kinds of categories like:
- Children’s picture books
- Middle grade and young adult fiction
- Romance
- Mystery and thrillers
- Fantasy and science fiction
- Poetry
- Memoirs
- History
- Cookbooks
- Self-help
- Graphic novels
- Literary fiction
- Health and wellness
- And many more.
Creating that balance is part of what makes the festival such a wonderful experience for our guests.
When Great Books Compete Against Great Books
Each year, we receive hundreds of applications. For the 2026 festival, we received nearly 400 applications for approximately 140 author spaces. This means we simply cannot accept every deserving book. Imagine receiving thirty exceptional poetry collections. Or thirty outstanding memoirs. Or thirty beautifully written romance novels.
As much as we might wish we could include them all, we also need room for children’s books, mysteries, fantasy, nonfiction, cookbooks, biographies, and dozens of other genres.
Sometimes your greatest competition isn’t every book. It’s the books within your own category.
Not Being Selected Doesn’t Mean Your Book Isn’t Good
This may be the most important thing we can say. If your book is not selected, please don’t assume your work wasn’t good enough. Selection decisions often involve far more than quality alone.
We’re building an experience for thousands of readers. We’re looking at the overall picture:
- Genre variety
- Reader interests
- Age groups
- Programming needs
- Space limitations
- And creating a balanced experience for everyone who attends.
Many wonderful books simply cannot fit into the final lineup.
Keep Writing. Keep Growing. Keep Submitting.
Every successful author has experienced disappointment. Rejections. Declined submissions. Awards they didn’t win. Festivals they weren’t accepted into.
Those moments don’t define your writing. They simply become part of the journey. If your book isn’t selected this year, we hope you’ll continue writing, continue improving your craft, and submit again in the future. Every year, every submission pool, and every festival lineup is different.
